AAUW Ely Branch Celebrates 90 Years

The Ely Branch was organized in 1926 with 24 charter members. The purpose of the group was to give college graduates in Ely opportunities to become acquainted, to exchange ideas, and to cooperate with National AAUW on a program of work having both local and national application.

The branch works closely with Vermilion Community College (an AAUW C/U Partner), with two members participating on the VCC Advisory Board, two members on the VCC Foundation Board and a VCC staff member on the AAUW Ely Board; by providing an annual scholarship to a nontraditional woman student attending VCC; by sponsoring a VCC student at NCCWSL at the University of Maryland; by organizing Equal Pay Day activities at the College; and cooperative efforts in encouraging young female students in STEM fields.

Since its organization, Ely Branch members have been actively involved in AAUW nationally and at the state level. At the national level, several members have participated in national committees – Audit Committee, Program Committee, and Fundraising Committee. At the state level, branch members have participated on the AAUW MN State Board and Committees including 3 past state presidents, VP of AAUW Funds, Historian, website manager, bylaws committee, nominating committee and awards committees.
